Okay, here is my friend Kim, whom I LOVE. Kim and I went to college together, and she is one of the most beautiful women I know. Her natural hair is really spirally (is that a word?) one thing i've noticed with hair as far as versatility goes, is that it is much easier to start out with nappy hair and go straighter (if you wish) than to start out with straight hair, and go curly/nappy. for example: (this the same lady... her hair is natural in each photo.) fro loose curls tighter curls wow... how can you not think black hair is the bomb?

Sera: part deux Your hair is SO LONG! Did you ever think it would get this long? S: Well, I was a little uncertain as to whether waist-length hair would be possible; however, I knew that as time went on that if I took good care of my hair then it would be possible. How did you know what to do to get it this long? And how many inches do you think you have? S: I knew that taking care of my hair and keeping it moisturized as much as possible would help with length retention. When measured, it is 28 inches (top/crown), 30 inches (midsection to bottom portion). It took about 4 years and 9 months to get to this length. So what is your secret? S: No secret, just lots of patience & care. I try to keep my hair moisturized and protected (i.e. twists/braids) Have there ever been any rough periods when your hair wasn't really growing, or you lost length or health. so, it's interesting how this ties in with our recent discussion on relaxed hair. it has some of the thickest, longest and most beautiful natural hair i've ever seen. well, had. she chose to relax (motions lye relaxer) in october 2008. her hair is gorgeous both ways. but i was surprised she relaxed, since i felt she had the best of both worlds — the health of natural hair with the option to straighten if she wanted a relaxed look. so, i asked her about it... so i am excited about this BGLH first: vanisha, who models and dances professionally, has submitted her photos . i was talking to J the other night, and we discussed how a lot of black female singers don't wear their hair naturally, while a higher number of black female models do. i definitely want to do my little part to encourage this trend and give some shine to an up and coming natural model/dancer. LADYLSA : I started transitioning in September/October 2004 and did the Big Chop in October 2005 so 2009 will make 4 glorious natural years for me. I decided to return natural after reading The Autobiography of Malcolm X. I vividly remember how he described his first conk and his realization of what the conk did to him and what he was trying to do to himself as an African American. L says~ The conk was a hairstyle popular among African American men from the 1920s to the 1960s. This hairstyle called for a man with naturally "kinky" hair to have it chemically straightened using a relaxer (sometimes pure lye), so that the now straight hair can be styled. Conks were usually large pompadours, sometimes made to resemble white hairstyles. Other black men chose to simply slick their straightened hair back, and allow it to lie flat on their heads.
