Nicole: Help! I need a formal style

Look #1: Bantu Knot Out Originally featured on April 16, 2009. Originally featured on June 5, 2008. instructions "the bantu knot-out was done on dry hair (blow dried or air dried) with a little bit of setting lotion. I only parted the front how I wanted the hair to fall. I sectioned off hair randomly (no parts) and twirled until it wrapped around itself, tucked it under and wrapped my head with a satin covering over night. It's better if there isn't too much space between the knots. In the morning, I just unraveled each one, finger combed it until it looked how I wanted and that was it!" Look #2: Blow out Originally featured on June 11, 2008. Look #3: F2x Bun Originally featured on October 11, 2008. Look #4: The Shalilac Pinup Originally featured on May 4, 2009.

some friday afternoon fun: natural hair

Image
this is janelle monae, an artist who, i think, is woefully underrated. a lot of naturals know about her, her hair is dope and i've *heard* that she styles it herself. but, to me, i think that j. monae is the embodiment of natural hair 5.0 . see, it's like i'm in 'survival' mode right now. you know, doing the twist/twist out/braid/braid out circuit. but one of the beauties of natural hair (as expressed by j. monae) is how VERSATILE it is . and one of the reasons i decided to go natural is cuz i was tired of everybody saying that you just can't do anything with natural hair, except flat iron it. i still feel that there's a WORLD of styling options out there (which is why i take up so much space on this blog just showing styles), and i am hopeful that one day naturals will evolve to a higher level of styling innovation (i know some of you are already there.) i mean braids and twists are great, don't get me wrong. but i wanna do some rolls and bumps and ...

Sera: part deux

Image
Sera: part deux Your hair is SO LONG! Did you ever think it would get this long? S: Well, I was a little uncertain as to whether waist-length hair would be possible; however, I knew that as time went on that if I took good care of my hair then it would be possible. How did you know what to do to get it this long? And how many inches do you think you have? S: I knew that taking care of my hair and keeping it moisturized as much as possible would help with length retention. When measured, it is 28 inches (top/crown), 30 inches (midsection to bottom portion). It took about 4 years and 9 months to get to this length. So what is your secret? S: No secret, just lots of patience & care. I try to keep my hair moisturized and protected (i.e. twists/braids) Have there ever been any rough periods when your hair wasn't really growing, or you lost length or health. S: I have had to cut off 3 inches on two separate occassions within a span of 2 months (in 2007) due to damaged ends -- our ...

twists... for work?

Image
Okay, I think these styles are gorgeous, and I would TOTALLY wear them both to work. I grew up in Jamaica, and in my experience natural styles were a lot more accepted in the workplace (although even in Jamaica there is bias towards chemically straightened hair). Here in the States I wonder, why couldn't this style be acceptable for work? Or, you know, am I wrong... is this accepted and I just don't know it? Weigh in!
