You are one of the most creative naturals I've come across; in both how you style and color your hair. Where do you get all this inspiration?! Aww thanks! As far as the color, I infuse color into every aspect of my life. A lot of naturals are afraid of color, but I’ve been coloring my hair since high school, when my hair was relaxed. I’ve gone through most brands and have learned which ones not to use ever again! The most important thing with color is maintaining the protein-moisture balance in your hair. Deep conditioning treatments become extremely important. I also don’t highlight my hair anymore because of the bleach involved. Over time, it will eat your hair up - trust!! I have colored my hair blue-black, every shade of red, cinnamon brown, bronze and had blond highlights. I love hair, always have. Doing my own hair was the first way I ever expressed my creativity. My hair is definitely an extension of me. I don’t plan anything – it just comes and with art that’s the best wa...

so i am excited about this BGLH first: vanisha, who models and dances professionally, has submitted her photos . i was talking to J the other night, and we discussed how a lot of black female singers don't wear their hair naturally, while a higher number of black female models do. i definitely want to do my little part to encourage this trend and give some shine to an up and coming natural model/dancer. "this is my story of 3 years :] — from shoulder length permed hair, to super short twists, then i found out about HAIRDYE (lol), and so many different hairstyles... (i even once) took the time to straighten my natural hair and curl it!! i'm known for my big hair, i'm a professional dancer/model and it really sets me apart from everyone." ~vanisha professional photos everyday natural looks straight/relaxed looks

This style was done by hair artist Keva Hall for her show entitled "My Good Hair" @ Rush Arts Gallery in New York. It is part of "Garveyism" -- styles based on Marcus Garvey's beauty pageants promoting natural beauty. This style was inspired by powdered wigs of the 18th century.

Dope Natural Hair

rachel: NC artist... dope natural hair So I started profiling Rachel in the previous post. She's a North Carolina based artist whose work is really powerful. She's worn her hair in a TON of different ways over the past 17 years — from backlength locs to a bald head. I asked her to share her photos and her philosophy.
