Choose a Gentle Shampoo
Look for a shampoo that has a low pH level because this type of product is very gentle on black hair. The pH level that you need is around four or five. This information is usually located on the label of the product. If it is not listed on the bottle, you can find out by using papers that were designed to test the pH levels. You can find them at a drugstore.

Find a Good Moisturizing Conditioner
The right conditioner is very important to the health of black hair since it is vulnerable to dryness and breakage. Take a good look at your strands. Are they strong and shiny or are they brittle and snap off easily? The answer to these questions will help you choose the right conditioner for your hair. If your strands are dry, look for a leave-in conditioner and use it at least once every two weeks. If your hair is already healthy, use a deep conditioner once a month. Be sure to condition after each time you shampoo.

Any time that you notice your hair drying out, moisturize it. Dampen your hair and then massage in a little olive oil. Adding natural oils to your damp hair will help seal in moisture and strengthen the strands. Olive oil also makes a great deep conditioner. For deep conditioning, apply it immediately after shampooing and cover your head with a plastic cap and leave it on for 60 minutes. Then rinse it off with lukewarm water.

Remember That Wet Hair is Extremely Delicate
African American hair is most vulnerable and prone to snapping off when it is wet. Don't tangle your hair when you wash it. Try to separate it into sections while you shampoo it to keep the strands from knotting together.
